Graystar padded forward, walking over into a clearing. The RiverClan river was nearby; though it was Leafbare and the water was frozen over. This had been the same clearing she had used to train her other apprentices; she was proud that one of her apprentices, Snowstorm, had become the deputy. Perhaps Achakpaw would have a high rank as well some day. Sitting down, the gray-furred wolf let out a quiet howl, for Achakpaw to hear that they would be training.

Achakpaw padded over to Graystar, his eyes beamed with the curiosity to learn how to do many things. Hunting being the primary. He stood there, his tail wagging a bit because of his apprehensiveness. He said one word, he barely ever spoke when he was not required to. So he spoke with his gentle and low pitched voice. "Hunting?" Was all he said, he wanted to put off fighting as much as he could. He was terrible at it, when he was very little he was always beat at fighting.

He was ready to learn. What if I am not good enough for even hunting? What if I am useless to this clan that I call home? No, StarClan created me for a reason, surely I am a hunter. He thought to himself. He looked to Graystar, she was teaching him so he was ready to learn from his leader. It was an honor to have one of his leaders as a mentor.

Graystar looked up at Achakpaw as her apprentice walked over. She nodded as he spoke of hunting; though he only said one word, she understood what the other wolf meant. "We can work on finding prey at the same time if you'd like. What prey can you scent nearby this clearing?" The StormClan wolf asked, her golden eyes looking around as she breathed in air at the same time, searching for any prey that was in the surrounding forest. It was Leafbare, so it was certain there would not be as much prey had it been Greenleaf. Still, she believed in Achakpaw to find prey; the apprentice seemed ready to learn and she wanted to teach him what she knew.

Achakpup nodded as she spoke, he listened to her. He lifted his snout and smelled the air, the scents hit his nostrils of many scents.Some of vole, and some of fish. They were near the river to the smell of fish was common. Though it was rather odd to him that he could smell fish when the river was frozen. "Vole, fish." He said, he was, alas, was a man of few words. Of all the things he said since he was born, he had said less then 50 words.

His tail wagged a bit more. He tried to practice his hunting technique. His tail dragging lightly across the ground and his pawsteps light, but not quite light enough as he snaked across the ground towards a near-by vole. He leapt, but it had heard him and it darted from where it was. He fell onto his paws and he looked at his mentor. He hadn't any idea what he did wrong. He was upset that he had not gotten it.

Graystar nodded as the apprentice said he could scent voles and fish; she could as well, although with the frozen river fishing wouldn't be exactly possible. She decided they could try to break some of the ice if they decided to fish. Achakpaw had tried to hunt a vole, however it seemed to have heard him and scampered away. The wolf walked over to her apprentice, her golden eyes glancing at him. "You did well in trying to catch the vole; next time you could try to keep your tail just off of the ground, so it's both unable to be seen yet not on the ground. If your pawsteps are as light as they can be, the prey you try to leap at won't be able to hear you." Graystar said with a kind smile. Her golden eyes looking at the apprentice, she wondered if he would try to go after another vole or look for something different.
