Leopardpaw and Silkstream's Training Topic!

Leopardpaw sluggishly made her way to the training area, still half-asleep. Why does training always have to take place in the morning?[/u] she asked herself as she expressed a very large yawn, exposing her jaws. [i]Why can't it be in the afternoon, maybe - or even better, not having it at all.... Unlike most apprentices on their very first training session, Leopardpaw was less than...ahem, enthusiastic. To her, it was the end of her carefree days as a pup, with only hard work and gruelling sessions with her mentor to look forward to until she became a warrior. And then what? More work as a warrior! She groaned as she turned the corner. And why Silkstream, of all wolves? The little apprentice knew that she was better off having her than any other wolf as her mentor, but even so the idea of having to put up with Silkstream's sarcastic little comments and her anti-lying ideas were a pain, and now Leopardpaw couldn't even snap back, because Silkstream was now her mentor.
Though she had to admit that she was glad that Silkstream was taking her on, just a little.
Leopardpaw came into view, looking high and mighty as usual. She didn't even acknowledge her mentor at first, taking time to look at the area around her, check her pelt and yawn once once, before finally speaking to her new mentor.
"Morning."
The flat, monotone voice was showing Leopardpaw's lack of enthusiasm clearly.

Leopardpaw shrugged. "Hunting, maybe?" she suggested. It was far too early in the morning, she decided, to go rampaging around trying out fighting - no, for she was sure hunting would be easier both mon the mind and the limbs. Surely, hunting was just pouncing on something, right?

"Fish?" Leopardpaw shrugged. Fishing couldn't be that bad, could it? It was hardly taxing - one just put their jaws to the water and bit down hard. It would certainly be easier than land hunting; one had to rush about to get the prey there. Oh, no, for she was sure this would be child's play.

Leopardpaw padded to Silkstream's side, and watched as her mentor demonstrated how to catch a fish. "Okay," she said, a tad doubtfully. Carefully, she sat by the river edge, following Silkstream's orders to the letter - something that was quite a rarity for the small apprentice - by standing still and not letting her shadow be seen by the fish. When a fish came by, she swiped at it, letting the fish fly towards the bank. But alas, it was not meant to be; the fish, although hitting the bank, slid down into the water before she could grab a hold onto it. Silkstream made it look so easy! "....Can I try again?" She looked up hopefully at her mentor. "I nearly got it last time."

Leopardpaw glanced back at the water and once again slid into the hunting crouch, one paw hovering, ready to swipe a fish out of the water. At first she thought that her first attempt had been lucky, for no fish seemed to be coming along this part of the river - but then she saw the small shadow, and quickly attempted to paw it out of the water. This time she succeeded, and with one bite the fish lay dead on the ground beside her. "I did it," she said happily, her tail wagging.

"Thanks," said Leopardpaw uneasily, unused to receiving praise from her mentor. She watched as Silkstream caught another fish. "Y-you're really good," she added, the words sounding strange in her mouth. She blinked. "Yeah, I'll have another go." Carefully, she repeated the movement, managing to hook another fish - one slightly smaller than the first, but a fish all the same. She found herself enjoying it, a feeling that was strange and alien to her.

Leopardpaw nodded, understanding. "So do you have to do it at a certain time, then, to stop your shadow scaring the fish?"

Leopardpaw nodded, understanding. Swiftly, she padded into the river, careful to dig in her claws to prevent the current from sweeping her back downstream. She waited, her eyes scanning the surface of the water for any sign of her quarry. For a moment or two she wondered if they had all gone and had vanished during the time she had spoken to Silkstream - but then she saw one, a fleeting glimpse of scale shining in the sunlight. At once she pounced, letting her paw flip over the fish and swat it to dry land. However as she did this she slipped on a rock at the river's bottom, and the fish just flew back into the water to rejoin it's fellows.
She scowled.
The apprentice waded out of the river once more, shaking her pelt as she did so. It had now become obvious that this fishing looked simple, but was in fact harder than it looked - to her it just seemed a game of chance rather than skill. "I think I'll have to try again on that one - all the stones at the bottom of the river are quite hazardous."
