Dragonpaw training with Stoatblaze

Stoatblaze ran through the clearings and grass, heading towards where he'd train his apprentice. He was glad Dragonpaw was his apprentice, as she seemed nice and full of energy; like himself. The wolf stopped nearby the river, in a clearing. Letting out a quiet howl he waited for Dragonpaw to show by the river.

Stoatblaze's blue eyes looked at Dragonpaw as she came up to where he was. "Welcome to training, Dragonpaw. You'll be learning different skills to become a warrior of SunClan. Is there anything you'd like to work on first?" The orange-tan warrior asked; he remembered training with Magmafeather and hoped he would be as good as a mentor as his was.

The warrior nodded as Dragonpaw asked if they could work on her hunting skills. "Sure, hunting sounds good. We can work on fighting after if you'd like." The SunClan wolf replied, his eyes glancing around and he scented the air. "There are many different prey scents in the forest, or in this case, by the river. Try to see what you can recognize and what you think would be the best to catch, or the easiest." Stoatblaze said to his apprentice, his ears perked in case prey would come nearby. It was nearly Leafbare, and with snow, prey would be hard to discover.

Stoatblaze watched as Dragonpaw leaped after and came over to him with a bird. "Nice catch Dragonpaw, though we should work on your hunting crouch a bit more. Make sure your tail isn't able to be seen, and try going down like this, and practice." The young warrior said, dropping down into a hunting crouch. He made sure his fur didn't really touch the snow beneath him, only enough so as to not be seen, and his tail was low to the ground, just high enough to not touch the snow. "Step carefully and make sure you're downwind of your prey; if you can hear them, it probably can hear you. Try to see if you can catch something again, you're doing very well so far." The orange wolf said; the first time he'd tried catching prey as an apprentice, a rabbit; it had managed to escape. Dragonpaw had caught a bird her very first try when training; she would probably be a good hunter, he thought.

The young warrior watched his apprentice drop down into a hunter's crouch, and move forward towards some scent he had scented before but didn't know what it was. Stoatblaze recalled scenting whatever this bird was nearby the river in what was RiverClan territory, now belonging to StormClan. He hoped Dragonpaw would do well catching birds, though she already had caught one. The orange wolf waited for his apprentice to try and hunt the bird, wondering what it would look like as he hadn't seen one before, only seeing the bird's feathers.

The tan-orange wolf looked at Dragonpaw as she had dropped the bird and asked what kind it was. Stoatblaze padded forward, lowering his head and sniffing at its feathers. "The bird is a pheasant, I think. That's what it's called. I heard some warriors call it that before. These kinds of birds are found in grasslands or near the water, from what I could scent of them." Stoatblaze told her, glancing around. "That bird was quite loud, I wonder if there's still any prey around. It will be Leafbare in but a few sunrises." The wolf said, murmuring the last sentence mainly to himself. His dark eyes glanced at his apprentice to see if she wanted to continue hunting or work on another task.

Stoatblaze glanced at Dragonpaw as the apprentice had caught the scent of something to catch. The orange wolf couldn't see what it was, but scented mice nearby. The wolf walked over behind a snowdrift, nearby the now partially frosted over river. Stoatblaze's orange pelt was bright, and his dark blue eyes easily could be seen from the snow; he didn't want to scare off Dragonpaw's mouse. The wolf watched from where he was, wondering if the mouse would find Dragonpaw before she leaped, or if his apprentice could catch it before it moved.

Stoatblaze glanced up from behind the snowdrift as Dragonpaw froze and ran off, the mouse bolting out of the way. His orange pelt bristled as he caught the scent his apprentice must have caught. No... of all the dangers it could have been, why badgers? Stoatblaze's dark blue eyes glanced around as if he expected the badgers to come running over. Since a pup, he'd been afraid of badgers; and he could scent more than one, probably a mother with its cubs. The badger would protect her cubs fiercely. Be brave for your apprentice. The normally fearless warrior told himself, running as fast as he could in Dragonpaw's direction. He heard her growl as she looked at the badger. "Dragonpaw, be careful. Badgers are fierce and can be dangerous. Do you think we should run them off SunClan territory?" He asked in a whisper, unsure why. He didn't like badgers, but the badger family couldn't just sit there by the river. SunClan's pups needed protection. His dark eyes watched the badgers as he waited for the apprentice's answer.

Stoatblaze glanced at Dragonpaw as she bared her teeth, telling him that they had to protect the pups. Dragonpaw had leaped up and injured one of the badger kits on its nose, when the mother badger started to charge. Why does it have to charge? That badger's the one that's on our territory! Stoatblaze thought, and tried to spring in front of Dragonpaw, hoping to protect his apprentice. He snarled loudly at the badger, his dark blue eyes a furious flame. "Get out of SunClan's territory you mouse-hearted intruder!" Stoatblaze growled as the badger charged at them. He was ready to attack it if it came any closer, his blue eyes watching each of the badger's moves towards the wolves.

Stoatblaze let out a yelp as the badger came forward and had attacked him, snarling as he tried to bite its muzzle. He noticed Dragonpaw go behind it and smile slightly before biting at the badger's tail. The angry badger then tried to swat at Dragonpaw. Stoatblaze let out a snarl, and thought about what to do. Without really thinking, he picked up a kit by its scruff and stepped backwards, preparing for the bader to charge at him. If he could get the badger and its kits out of the den, and then guard the badger den, they would have to leave. At least, he hoped they would; he wasn't trying to risk his fur getting shredded for nothing at all.

Stoatblaze bolted away as the badger ran after him. He snarled to himself as he realized how he wasn't a fast runner. I'm part WindClan, I should be fast! The tan warrior told himself, though slightly shook his head. Stoatblaze was careful not to injure the badger kit as he glanced back at Dragonpaw. "Stay far from the badger, and if it comes towards you then run!" He barked back to her from around the kit's fur. He continued to try and lead the badger away from SunClan territory, dashing towards the frozen part of the river.

Stoatblaze ran onto the river, careful not to break the ice, as he still held the badger kit. He lost his balance on the icy floor below, nearly falling over. He glanced back to make sure the badger was following as the warrior leaped to the other side of the shore. He gently set down the badger kit, and looked up for Dragonpaw. "How many badger kits were there, just these two?" He barked loudly, his eyes returning to the badger.

Stoatblaze picked up one of the kits, setting it next to the other, as he leaped forward to help Dragonpaw. He was once a RiverClan wolf, he knew how to swim if needed. Stoatblaze slowly stopped near the hole in the ice, watching as the ice broke off a bit more. "Be careful Dragonpaw. The water is very cold, and the river might be moving fast. If we can together bring the badger onto the ice, we can bring her over to her kits." He said, crouching down to the ice as he slowly stepped forward in an effort not to fall to the waters below, his pelt bristling as the ice began to break a bit.
